The Summit Sessions are a concert and event series of Lienzer Bergbahnen AG in the Zettersfeld ski area. At the Summit Stage, directly next to the Steinermandl bottom station, numerous events take place throughout the whole winter. Admission is free for everyone; the fastest and easiest way to reach the event area is with the Zettersfeldbahn. Tip: For guests of Lienzer Bergbahnen the ski bus is free.

You can find all event dates here

Zettersfeld Challenge

The Zettersfeld Challenge is the successor of the popular guest ski race and takes place every Friday from January onwards on the Zettersfeld.

Here, guests as well as locals can compete in giant slalom and fight for the coveted challenge trophy. The course is located in the lower section of piste no. 4 and ends with the finish area directly at the Steinermandl bottom station. The course is not too difficult because fun is clearly the main focus! Afterwards, the big prize-giving ceremony with race party takes place on and around the Summit Stage. Registration is done directly via your accommodation or on site in the finish area. Ready, steady, GO

How & when does technical snowmaking take place?

In short, “technical snowmaking” produces artificial snow by spraying fine water droplets into the cold air when weather conditions are suitable. There they freeze into small ice crystals and fall to the ground as snow.

Over the summer months, the Lackenboden storage pond is filled with water and the snowmaking equipment is serviced. From November onwards we are then allowed to start snowmaking!

The collected water is treated by UV systems so that it has drinking water quality. It is then pumped into the pipe systems and flows to the respective snow producers (snow cannons and lances). There the water is forced through special nozzles and divided into tiny droplets. As the droplets fly through the cold air, they lose heat and freeze. The frozen particles then land on the ground as snow. Over time, so-called snow piles form, which remain in place for a while to “dry out” before they are roughly distributed with the grooming machines. This has the advantage that the surface area is increased and the snow can freeze through more effectively. Only when this process is complete is the snow processed into the snow carpet we all value and love, by using cutters and finishers. When the snowmelt begins, the snow returns to the ground as water and closes the natural cycle.

Facts:

  • The use of additives for snow production is prohibited in Tyrol
  • A relatively low water temperature in the storage pond is beneficial for snow production, as the water warms up slightly again due to friction in the pipes
  • Production and consistency depend significantly on the wet-bulb temperature (air temperature + humidity). The lower the wet-bulb temperature, the more efficient and higher the snow quality.
  • The more humid the air, the lower the air temperature must be
  • Efficiency and sustainability also mean that wind direction and wind speed are taken into account. We have only worked successfully if the snow actually lands on the piste areas.
  • Despite a very efficient and state-of-the-art snowmaking system, snow production on the Zettersfeld is difficult to compare with other areas. Due to the south-facing slopes and strong thermals, production is mainly possible during the night hours.
Piste grooming

Every day after the pistes close, our bully team heads out and works until late at night. With our piste machines, each with several hundred horsepower, every centimetre of the piste areas is tilled and smoothed so that a magical snow carpet awaits you the next morning. By using state-of-the-art surveying technology, our drivers always know the exact snow depths and can react early to guarantee continuous snow coverage. On steep slopes, so-called winch cats are required for optimal grooming, i.e. piste machines that move with the help of steel cables. The cables can disappear deep into the snow at terrain edges and are therefore sometimes invisible before they shoot upwards again under tons of tension. We explicitly point out that entering the pistes after closing time, as well as during preparation and follow-up work, is strictly prohibited. The use of winch cables can lead to serious or even fatal injuries.

If you want to learn more about our bully team’s nightly work, you have the chance to sit in the passenger seat during the “Pistenbully Experience” and watch the bully team at work. An unforgettable experience is guaranteed!

Ski touring on the pistes

In contrast to many ski resorts, Lienzer Bergbahnen AG offers its own marked uphill tracks for piste ski touring. In addition, the Outdoor Map Lienz can be purchased, which includes free use of the ski bus as well as 6 lift ascents per day.

To ensure everyone gets along well on the mountain, there are a few rules that must be observed:

  • Entering the pistes is only permitted during the operating hours of the mountain lifts
  • Uphill travel is only permitted along the signposted routes
  • For safety reasons, the ascent must take place at the edge of the piste
  • Walking side by side is strictly forbidden
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash and walk directly next to their handler
  • The FIS rules of conduct must be observed
  • For evening events, the designated pistes must be used for ascent and descent, and the specified time restrictions must be observed
  • Entering closed pistes is strictly prohibited!
  • Due to the use of winch cats there is an increased risk of injury, which can lead to serious or even fatal injuries!!! –> See “Piste grooming”
  • The instructions of the mountain lift staff must be followed
  • Skiing on freshly groomed pistes at night is strictly prohibited! On the one hand, as mentioned above, entering is forbidden and there is a considerable risk of injury; on the other hand, it nullifies the work of the bully team. The fresh tracks freeze overnight and may, for safety reasons, result in the complete closure of the ski run the next day.

We ask for your understanding so that a good coexistence on the mountain can continue to be ensured.

If you have any further questions, we are happy to help you in person or at service@lienzer-bergbahnen.at

Weather-related suspension of operations

The safety of our guests and employees is our top priority!

In the event of, for example, storms or lightning, lift operations may be temporarily suspended. As soon as the situation has eased, the lifts will be put back into operation immediately so that all guests can be safely transported from the mountain down into the valley. Should there be no improvement in the situation in extreme cases, a shuttle service will be provided.

We ask for your understanding and a little patience, but we cannot influence the weather either.
